February 11 is National Foundation Day in Japan

On this date in 1946, General MacArthur approved Japan’s draft constitution. It is also the date of a historical holiday for the founding of Japan by the Emperor Jimmu. National Foundation Day is a day to reflect on what it means to be a citizen of Japan, and the values upon which the nation was founded—pacifism, democracy, and freedom among them. This year it comes at a time when Japan faces challenges from China, violence against its citizens in the Middle East, and a redefinition of the role of its military in today’s world order. Reflecting periodically about what we stand for and what we believe in amid the ever-changing chaos in the world helps us understand where we have come from and where we intend to go.

When was the last time you did the same in your business? Do you and those who work in your business periodically collectively reflect on your business’s values and what you believe in? Do you examine where you have come from and where your values indicate you might go? Does your business have its own Foundation Day? If not, perhaps it should.

Here’s wishing a happy Foundation Day to you.
